4 Maintenance Tips For Your Washer And Dryer

Blog

Your washer and dryer are key to providing your family with clean clothes every day, but when's the last time you gave your washer and dryer a good cleaning? If you want to keep these appliances working properly for many years to come, regular maintenance is a must. Here are four tips to keep in mind that will keep your washer and dryer functioning as they should.

Inspect the Hoses and Vent

Your washing machine's hoses are used to fill up the machine with water and then drain it as necessary. These hoses can wear down over time, however, so it's important to keep an eye on them. You want to look for any developing cracks or signs of a bulge. While you're at it, also adjust the hose fittings and make sure they are tight.

After you look at the hoses for the washer, locate the air vent or exhaust duct for your dryer. This is typically located outside your house. You want to make sure that, when the dryer is operating, there is heat coming through this vent. If you put your hand up to it and don't feel anything, it may be a sign that there is a blockage, like dryer lint or a bird's nest, getting in the way.

Don't Go Overboard on Detergent

Stick with the right kind of detergent for your washer, especially if your washer is energy-efficient. Using the wrong kind of detergent, or too much of it, could cause residue to build up over time. This could lead to a clog or other issues.

Wipe It Down and Air It Out

If you spill any detergent or notice moisture on your washer or dryer after a load, take a moment to wipe everything down. The washing machine's door, gasket and drum should be dry or you will risk having mold develop. You should also leave the washing machine's door open for a bit to air out any odor that might be inside.

Remove Lint as Often As Possible

If you want to avoid a clog in your dryer's exhaust, you should remove lint from the lint trap as often as possible. If you are drying something that you know is going to give off an excessive amount of lint, don't be afraid to stop the dryer halfway through to clean out the filter and then put the dryer back on.

Resolving Appliance Issues

When was the last time you started looking at your appliances? I realized about a year ago that our appliances were starting to have some issues, so I began thinking about my options. It occurred to me that there were some businesses in my area that offered appliance services plans, and they even offered complimentary bids to help you to diagnose the issues. It was really interesting to see how much of a difference I was able to make by simply contacting the appliance services place, and before I knew it, things were a lot better.
